HSC Textiles and Design Major Work

An ‘Epic’ Inspired Figure Skating Dress

For my Textile and Design Major work I decided to create a figure skating dress inspired by one of my favourite animation film’s ‘Epic’. In ‘Epic, A young girl finds herself transported into an alternate world, where good forces are fighting against their evil counterparts. the Leafmen, tiny humanoid soldiers fight to protect the neighbouring forest from wicked creatures called Boggans.

I have been a figure skater for 18 years of my life and wanted to bring some nostalgia back into the sport. I began choosing a piece of music from the film and decided on the song ‘Leafmen’. This song plays as the Leafmen of the forest begin their journey.

This dress takes inspiration from the costume worn by Queen Tara, uses elements such as pleating, panelling, piping and sequinning to create the final effect.

The Inspiration

The song ‘Leafmen’ from ‘Epic’ used to inspire the creation of my figure skating dress.

Rock Apocalypse

Rock Apocalypse is rock ‘n roll party show which is a parody and tongue-in-cheek tribute to horror and sci-fi B-movies from the 1950’s to the present day. The music is rock ‘n roll, blues, gospel, rock and anthem-based. The props were created by myself and other student in my year.

Cert III in Live Production and Services

I completed my Certificate III in Live Production and Technical Services over 2021-2022. This course taught me about elemtents such as;

  • scenery and set construction
  • lighting, sound and vision
  • entertainment customer service
  • staging
  • live production
  • entertainment technical operations

This developed my ability to work in a team to co-ordinate and create all elements for a production. During my Time at high School the majority of the productions run were festivals, performances and showcases. Set ups for these shows are highlighted.

The Producers – Sydney Youth Musical Theatre

Based on the Mel Brooks’ Academy Award-winning 1968 film of the same name, The Producers – the new Mel Brooks musical is the story of down-on-his-luck theatrical producer, Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, a mousy accountant. This show feature a house set and many costume related props. I aided in the creation of these and helped run props for the show.
